What is Colon Cancer?
The colon is the longest and the final part of the large intestine. When cancers form in the tissues of the colon, it is known as colon cancer. Most cases of colon cancers are adenocarcinomas, which implies, that the cancer build up starts from mucus and fluid producing and releasing cells.
Impact of Colon Cancer
In the list of the most common cancer, cases that are diagnosed in the United States, the colon cancer stands at the third position. Worldwide, colon cancer stands at number two position in the list of deaths caused by cancer. Each year there is an addition of nearly 100,000 new colon cancer patients to the already existing list in the United States alone. The colon cancer statistics as obtained from the American Cancer Society reveal that out of these 100,000 patients of colon cancer, nearly half die. It is also estimated that more women than men are being diagnosed with colon cancer. However, the deaths resulting from colon cancer have nearly equal proportions among the men and women.
As per the colon, cancer statistics in the United States, for the year 2009, there were 106,100 new cases of colon cancer. This was besides the 40,870 cases of rectal cancer. The deaths during the same period were to the tune of 49,920 for the rectal and colon cancer, combined. These statistics reveal that the deaths resulting from colon and rectal cancer are almost 50% of the new cases that crop up each year.
However, as per the colon cancer statistics, it is revealed that the death rate due to colon and rectal cancer, in the past few years has declined. The reason is attributed to increased awareness of colon toxicity and colon cancer, which has led people to get routine colonoscopy screening. The diagnosis of colon cancer and toxic build-up in the colon, in early stages has been able to cut down on the number of new cases of colon cancer and the resulting deaths.
Chances of Survival
Early detection of cancer of any form is one way of increasing the chances of survival after a cancer is diagnosed. In case of colon cancer, the causes are attributed to several factors that include age, family history and genetic diseases. Aged people have a higher chance of being diagnosed with colon cancer. As per the colon cancer statistics, it has been found that in aged people there is a five percent chance of them being diagnosed with colon cancer and three percent chance of dying. Chemotherapy and administering of various drugs is thought to be the correct line of treatment after surgery has been performed on patients with colon cancer. However, as the colon cancer statistics reveal that of those that received chemotherapy and those that did not, the survival rate was just 8% to 13.5% more. Moreover, chemotherapy has its own set of side effects. Therefore, for an 8% to 13.5% chance of survival, it is better to adopt measures that treat colon toxicity and cancer by the use of herbs and changes in diet and lifestyle.
It is wise to consider the preventative measures that have been set in place in order to avoid colon cancer. This can be done in a number of ways which mainly include a fibrous and healthy diet. The most popular preventative step involves performing a colon cleanse at regular intervals.
