Colon Cleanse Detox Diet
It is possible to approach cleansing and detoxifying from a number of angles, but a good colon cleanse detox diet works well alone or in conjunction with other methods. There are a number of products on the market that can effectively flush matter from the digestive tract but in order to work their best it is advisable to combine the supplements with a cleansing diet. Results will be achieved much more quickly and a colon cleanse detox diet will keep the digestive system in optimal performance over the long haul.
Fiber
Adding dietary fiber is one of the most important aspects of a colon cleanse detox diet. Fiber flushes the intestines by drawing water. As it is moved along the digestive tract, virtually everything in its path is flushed right along with it. There are two types of fiber to be concerned with, soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber such as psyllium is a muciligenic fiber that turns into a gel-like mass when it comes into contact with fluids. This mass glides easily while insoluble fiber literally ‘scrapes’ built up waste off the walls of the intestines. Therefore, many naturopaths prefer soluble to insoluble fiber as it is gentler on the system.
Food Combining
One of the main causes for improper digestion is eating foods in the same meal that utilize digestive enzymes that ‘counteract’ each other. For instance, it is never suggested to eat carbs and proteins in the same meal. The reason for this is because they utilize different digestive enzymes to break them down and unfortunately, those enzymes also cancel each other out. This results in undigested foods that sit there fermenting and eventually start building up and collecting against intestinal walls. Also, it is suggested that foods be eaten in the order in which they are digested. Juices only take about a half hour where fruits take up to three-quarters of an hour. Proteins take the longest which can be a period of time longer than three hours.
Fluids
Most naturopaths suggest a colon cleanse detox diet that provides for plenty of water, juice and green tea. Not only are juices and green tea high in antioxidants that flush toxins from the entire body but fluid also helps to keep matter soft for easier elimination. It is suggested that a person drink approximately one-half ounce of water/fluids for every pound of body weight. This would mean that a person weighing 145 pounds should drink about 72.5 ounces or roughly 9 glasses of fluids per day. It is also recommended that the water be room temperature or warmer since cold fluids hinder digestion by tightening up the muscles in the gut.
Even when a person chooses to use a colon cleansing or detoxifying supplement, a colon cleanse detox diet is a welcome addition. Not only does it assist the supplement in cleansing built up waste and toxins, but a sensible cleansing diet also helps restore the digestive system to better health and functionality. The purpose of cleansing is to promote better intestinal health and a colon cleanse detox diet enhances the efficiency of the product.
