Colon Cleansing Risks
The practice or therapy of colon cleansing has come a long way and has literally weathered a lot of bad storms. However, it’s interesting to note that despite the high level of opposition against colon cleansing, a lot of people keep embracing the practice daily with favorable testimonials.
One of the strongest opposition to the practice of colon cleansing comes from the scientific or medical community. This really comes as no surprise however, seeing that medical science has always had issues with the concept of alternative or natural medical therapies. Thus it’s no surprise that when this practice is being condemned, a lot of emphasis is put on colon cleansing risks. This is not to say that there’s no truth in the highlighted risks (although there’s usually a lot of exaggeration). There are risks associated with all practices from all walks of life; however, when we learn these risks the procedure in question becomes a lot safer as it is performed more responsibly.
Potential Risks
Infection: colon hydrotherapy involves the use of enemas or water often mixed with natural additives injected into the colon through the anus by the use of tubes. The liquid is allowed to spend some time which could be a few seconds to minutes and then evacuated via another tube. Usually, fecal material and other tiny waste matter are often removed after several times of filling the colon. The potential risk associated with this procedure is that the tubes and equipment used in introducing the enema into the colon might be contaminated and cause bacterial infections. This risk is significantly increased when done unprofessionally.
Trauma: this risk is also associated with colonic irrigation and can result from improper handling or rough introduction of the equipment into the colon. If this happens, it can lead to perforation or tearing of the colon. However there have been very few reported cases of this occurrence.
Disruption of physiological chemical balance: this is a risk associated with the use of oral colonic cleansing products such as laxatives, herbs, supplements and herbs. Usually some regimes incorporating several formulations of these products are often recommended by several practitioners. These can result in the disruption of the electrolyte balance and this has been said to cause dehydration and heart related problems especially when used with some other products like coffee and certain vitamin supplements.
Managing the Risks
Colon cleansing risks are however not enough to discourage the practice. Just like any other procedure, the key is learning how to manage the associated risks. The effective management of colon cleansing risks includes: patronage of certified professionals and products, adherence to given instructions, and regulation of dietary intake.
There have been some scams associated with colon cleansing products due to illegitimate companies. However this problem is associated with every commercial enterprise worldwide which is why it is necessary to be diligent and careful when making purchases online.
