Colon Explosion

One of the possible risks inherent in a colonoscopy is a colon explosion. Of course, there are other risks associated with this procedure but most are less harmful to the body and can be quickly corrected. However, because of the nature of this risk it garners a lot of attention.

What Is A Colon Explosion?

A colon explosion is the result of gases in the colon igniting. This usually happens when a buildup of methane gas or hydrogen comes in contact with the electricity of the colonoscope. This is especially true when a polyp is being removed by electrocautery. The colon can literally be blown apart and the adjacent organs can seriously be damaged. Most often this event is fatal.

What Causes The Gas Build Up?

A recent study done by the Department of Gastroenterology at the Mater Hospital and University College Dublin shows that one of problems was the use of a medication given during the procedure. Mannitol, Polyethylene Glycol and a Phosphate enema all resulted in high levels of hydrogen in the colon in about 5% of the cases studied. Methane build up in the colon is usually the result of normal digestion. Some individuals produce more methane than others do.

Preventing A Colon Explosion During Colonoscopy

It has now become a standard practice during any colon procedure to infuse the colon with carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide interacts with the methane and the hydrogen to prevent any gases from igniting. This method is also used as a standard practice on any abdominal surgery and is usually a means of safely inflating the abdomen. Before your colonoscopy ask your doctor about all the risks and what measures are being taken to prevent any serious side effects from the procedure. If your doctor does not mention carbon dioxide infusion into your colon, then be sure to check again. Of course, the best way to prevent a colon explosion when you are having a standard colonoscopy is to opt for the virtual colonoscopy or an ultrasound.

Keeping The Colon Healthy

Another way to lower the risk of a colon explosion is to follow your doctor’s instructions prior to your colon exam. A clean and empty colon is the best way for the physician to see any abnormalities. Therefore, for a few days leading up to the procedure you will be asked to follow a regimented diet to rid the colon of all fecal material and built up gases. In addition you might want to go one step further and use one of the very effective colon cleansing products available. These cleansers work to remove the tough fecal build up that can get stuck in folds and crevasses of the colon. In addition to the colon cleanser consider colon hydrotherapy as another means of cleaning out the colon.

A colon explosion is a very rare event and has been almost eliminated by the use of carbon dioxide. However, it is still considered a risk factor in colonoscopy and should be discussed with your doctor.
