Constipation can affect an individual of any age though, people older than 50 are more likely to be constipated often as the efficiency of the digestive process and the colon decreases with age. This also puts them at a higher risk of blockage and other health disorders.
Constipation is not a serious problem for many people. But, it is an indication of a bad lifestyle and diet. It is more a symptom than a disease itself. Sometimes colon diseases like cancers, diverticulitis and IBS can cause constipation. Hence, it should not be ignored.

Treating constipation begins with home remedies. Fiber and water intake should be increased and foods which are hard to digest are to be avoided. During this time, regular defecation is essential to prevent blockage. Excess straining can hurt the external opening. Some lubricants can be used to reduce redness and inflammation caused due to straining. Alcohol should also be avoided as it can reduce water absorption of stools and hamper with mucus formation.
Regular workout improves blood and oxygen supply to organs of the body and keeps them functioning optimally. It reduces the risk of many health disorders like hypertension, diabetes, muscle related problems and even cancers. Exercise is also important to keep the digestive system functioning properly and thus reduces the chances of blockage and constipation.
2. Laxatives
Laxatives make stools softer and easier to pass. While they provide instant relief, their constant use can make the body dependent on them. This causes withdrawal symptoms. Mild laxatives are fiber supplements that make stools bulky and cause the colon to absorb less water. Laxatives used for longer durations can stimulate the muscles of the colon.
3. Surgery
Surgery is the last option and in most cases not required unless a serious colon problem has been identified or constipation has caused complications. Colon prolapse due to straining is one complication that needs immediate surgery. Surgical treatment removes the damaged part of the colon and connects the rectum to the remaining part.

Constipation is easy to prevent. By simply consuming more dietary fiber, increasing water intake and with regular exercise, constipation can be prevented.
Colon cleansing on scheduled basis can keep constipation away. Colon cleansing products are easily available and are inexpensive. Before using a cleanser, you must consult a doctor about its use.
Foods that are to be eaten regularly include green vegetables like cabbage, spinach and fruits like papaya. Whole gram and oats are also rich in fiber. Flax seeds also contain fiber and prevent constipation.
